The cucumbers are going okay. It would have helped if we gave them a taller trellis. And maybe grew them further away from the tomatoes and the squash, which are almost smothering them.
Yes, cucumbers can grow next to a west-facing fence with a trellis, but morning sun only may be a little marginal depending on how many hours they actually get.
Cucumbers are happiest with about 6–8 hours of direct sun. If that spot gets roughly 5–6 hours of good morning sun, especially through midday, they can still do quite well. If it only gets 3–4 hours, you’ll likely get lots of vine growth but fewer cucumbers, slower ripening, and more susceptibility to mildew.
A trellis is a good idea there. It keeps the vines upright, improves airflow, makes harvesting easier, and can help the leaves capture more available light. I’d place the trellis so the vines aren’t pressed tightly against the fence—leave roughly 6–12 inches of breathing room if possible.

The basil plants are also thriving. We have all the basil we want, and possibly more. Perhaps we should look for recipes for frozen basil.
